  • Is Mount Everest Really the world’s Highest Mountain?

Mount Everest is known for the being the highest mountain in the world. Almost 1000 people attempt to conquer Everest’s summit annually. Coming in at 29,029 feet tall, it’s no wonder why not every one of those people are able to make it to the top.

    Is Everest really the highest?

Technically… it’s not! The world’s tallest mountain is actually located in Hawaii, and its name is Mauna Kea. Over one half of this beast is submerged underwater causing a lot of controversy whether it should be considered the tallest or not.

    Mauna Kea

See above image to understand how much of the mountain is underwater.

Mauna Kea towers 13,796 feet above sea level. Compared to Everest this doesn’t seem too high,  but 19,700 feet of Mauna Kea stays hidden below the Pacific Ocean. Totaling about 33,500 feet tall, it is technically the tallest mountain in the world. Mauna kay is actually an inactive volcano. If measured from the bottem of the ocean floor, Mauna Kea is about a mile taller than Everest.

    Mauna Kea

Unlike Everest, Mauna Kea is easily accessed. You can access the summit by car, but once you  reach Hale Pohaku basecamp, it is required to have a 4×4 vehicle to proceed to the summit. Mauna Kea requires a 30-minute acclimatization stop at the Onizuka Visitor’s Center. The visitor center is at 9,200 feet and allows your body to adjust to the altitude.

    Mauna Kea

Mauna Kea is arguably the best stargazing location in the world. The summit provides the perfect vantage point to watch its famous sunrise or sunset above the clouds. Mauna Kea’s clear thin air, little precipitation, lack of light pollution and high altitude makes for an unforgettable experience for anyone who has the privilege to visit.

    Mauna Kea

Some of the world’s best telescopes are located here at the summit. Mauna Kea’s landscape makes you feel like you are in another galaxy or on another planet. (You can see why in the picture above.) Looking off in the view on a clear day you can see Maui in the distance. This, on top of everything else, makes for the perfect training for NASA’s astronauts who train here.

    Mauna Kea

Before sunrise or sunset, there are free stargazing programs at the visitor center. You can also purchase guided trips through Inclusive Excursions. The guided Inclusive trips include hot meals, drinks, transportation, and a professional astronomy educator with a laser pointer to explain clusters. Truly a magical experience.

Would you plan a trip here?

If you are planning a trip to Mauna Kea, make sure to come prepared. Wind speeds can reach up to 150MPH at the summit. This causes sleet, dirt, and sometimes even rocks to fly close to this speed as well. Make sure you prepare for the dropping temperatures. The temperature at the summit can drop to 20 degrees Fahrenheit in just 4 hours, so dress properly and enjoy.

  • Have You Been To South Africa?

South Africa is one of the most unique places to visit. With so much ground to cover, it is a good idea to plan for a longer stay than normal… or pack a bike to help you cover it. Home to Greg Minnaarmultiple, multiple world time mountain bike champion, and Pietermaritzburg’s finest. South Africa clearly offers some gnarly trails that are a must visit.

Given South Africa’s bountiful and diverse outdoor environments, as well as the excellent weather, it is probably not surprising that MTB has exploded in the country!  While for young and old, singles and families, it may just be a great healthy past time, but MTB has also developed as a significant sport, and South Africa has become a serious destination for enthusiasts. South Africa’s most challenging mountain bike race, the Cape Epic, is internationally unrivaled as a pinnacle mountain bike event.

Today, the South African MTB calendar is packed with diverse events across a wide range of locations that draw elite professional riders from around the world, as well as many amateur enthusiasts. With more than 400 mountain biking trails, some of which are hailed as amongst the best in the world, it’s no wonder that South Africa has become a sought-after mountain bike destination. In 2018, Stellenbosch again hosted The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup for another great year.

Sabie is arguably the best mountain biking destination in South Africa – is the ideal springboard for both novice and accomplished mountain bikers to practice this sport in a secure environment amidst breathtaking scenery.  Sabie offers both the competitive and the casual mountain biker a wide range of well-marked, self-guided mountain bike trails.

With purpose-built MTB trails from a decade of cross-country racing in one of South Africa’s most beautiful settings, what you experience here will motivate many happy returns. You can literally do a different ride every day of the week. The many trails are in existence thanks to the efforts of a small but dedicated group of locals, namely the Sabie Chain-Gang Club and the Mpumalanga MTB Association (MAMBA). Working closely with major forestry corporations like SAPPI, MONDI, SAFCOL, and Global Forestry Products, as well as stakeholders in the local tourism industry, they have gained and maintained land access for off-road cycling on private forestry property surrounding Sabie. Consequently, this has become a prime recreational and racing mecca for mountain-biking enthusiasts all over the country.

    South Africa

Sabie is the perfect hub for an off-road cycling vacation, from competitive riders consolidating their training to families with little fledgling cyclists. Road cyclists too will revel in mile upon mile of challenging mountain rides along quiet, wide tarred roads. Mountain bike trails through the bushveld near Olifants Rest Camp in Kruger National Park are one of a kind! You’ll have to be a confident shredder for these trails though.

The tours are something like a cross between a game drive and a game walk. You’ll have a game drive to begin with to get to the starting location. Once you hop on your bikes, you’ll cover more distance and have tons more fun than on a game walk, but just like a game walk, you’ll be powered by your own legs!

Mountain biking in Kruger National Park is a unique experience. The only rest camp offering it is Olifants, which is about halfway up the park on the eastern side.

There are two trails on offer:

    • The Hardekool Draai Trail, which follows the Letaba River, goes for 21.4km (13.3 miles). The ride lasts about 4 hours.
    • The Olifants/Letaba River Confluence Trailgoes for 12.2km (7.6 miles). The ride goes for 3 hours, andyou need to be an expert mountain biker to do it. It’s a tough one!

If you ask any off-road cyclist in the Western Cape where the best mountain biking routes are, Tokai Forestis sure to be included in their answer. The steep slopes that characterize the Constantiabergand the Silvermine Nature Reservemake it ideal for mountain biking. With accumulated ascent for the day of 1,200 meters, there will be plenty of hard work to do.

There are some excellent vantage points along the route, with terrific views of the Constantia Vineyards, Hout Bay, Noordhoek Valley, and Table Mountain. Bring your camera along as you may see some baboons!

    South-Africa

While Table Mountain basks in the warm light of dawn with the amber glow of the early morning sun slanting through tall trees and bushes, we are fortunate to be riding in the midst of such beauty.

For those who want to see “the best of the Cape”in one day, this carefully planned mountain bike ride through the Table Mountain National Parkand the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, made up of fast flowing gravel jeep trails, lung-busting climbs, and single tracks, will plant a huge smile on your face!

Apart from the beautiful mountain towering over this historic and unique little town, the variety of activities and natural treasures located within 30-60 minutes’ drive from Swellendam is this destination’s biggest draw-card. In 2007, when the Absa Cape Epic still traveled from Knysna to Stellenbosch (with Swellendam as one of the stopovers), people used to say that it was one of the only races where you could experience anything from single track to rolling hills, epic climbs to fast flats, forest to Klein Karoo – because it traveled such a long distance. The effort of setting up a race village in a new town each day and the cost involved was one of the reasons that the Absa Cape Epic stopped traveling in a straight line from Knysna and opted for the Clover-system. The Clover-system is where you start and finish at least two days of racing from the same venue. When staying in Swellendam you will have the comfort of choosing between single track, rolling hills, forests, Klein Karoo, through a pass, to the ocean, over a ferry – while enjoying the comfort of staying in one place!

In Knysna, you will cycle through mystical indigenous forests and, just 15km out of Knysna, you will find the Homtini Mountain Bike Trailin the Farleigh State Forest. The entire town surrounds a large saltwater estuary called the Knysna Lagoon. Therefore, besides the nitty-gritty of South African mountain biking fun, you can also enjoy numerous recreational activities, such as boating, fishing, swimming and lots of adventuring.

The Hakerville Cycle Routesare situated in the Hakerville Forest between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. There are four routes catering for the beginner to the more advanced mountain biker.

The routes are color-coded and are as follows:

    • Yellow Route: This route is 13km in length and follow gravel forest service roads and will be the only route open when the others are closed due to wet ground conditions.
    • Blue Route: Covering a distance of 11km, this route follows gravel service roads and also along the Beukespad, a forest slip-path, through moist high forest. On returning you pass by some huge Coastal Redwoods planted in 1927.
    • Green Route: This 14km route takes the rider along the Grooteilandpad and onto the Waterpad where there is a refreshing swimming hole, great for taking a break. There is an optional loop that will along which you will have breathtaking views of the Hakkerville coastline. on the return, the route follows the Kleineilandpad and then onto the Perdekoppad where you can enjoy an exciting section of single-track.
    • Red Route: This is the longest and hardest of the routes and is said to be one of the most scenic routes in the country. This route takes you through deep indigenous forest, fynbos, and incredible coastal views along the way. 22km in length and more than 10km of single track, this route is definitely the most exhilarating.

  • Plan A Trip To Climb Mount Everest!

I bet Everest has always been on your mind. It’s one of those things that many want to accomplish. There is something about challenging the human body and mind that thrills us.

Why would anybody want to endure the struggle in such brutal conditions and temperatures? Why do they do it?… Why not?

If you never challenge yourself to do something you’re unsure of, you will always be unsure. As Tony Robins said – “the biggest risk in life is not taking one at all.”

Located in the Himalayas in Asia, Mt. Everest is the highest mountain in the world, which makes it the ultimate check off on most everyone’s bucket list. Is it feasible? Is it easy?…yes, and no.

    Everest

You know that saying, “if it was easy, everyone would do it?” That’s why it’s such a big deal to climb Everest — because it’s not easy.

Since 1977 this mountain claims at least one life per year, so don’t take this climb lightly. If you want to do something, do it, just make sure you have the proper training for it.

Live the life you want, what ever that may be. If you’re body is telling you to take a risk, listen. This is a life goal for many. If you are serious about this, make sure you are properly trained.

The worlds highest mountain isn’t going to be an easy climb, but with the proper training and gear, it is doable.

Picture yourself at 29,029 ft. Now, is it worth it? The negative temperatures, steep climbs, high altitudes, and brutal weather is no joke, but is the view and the satisfaction worth it? If you make a commitment to yourself, you gotta make it happen. You won’t know if you never do it.

If you’re serious about taking on the biggest baddest mountain in the world, call on Inclusive Excursions to guide you.

    Patagonia

Futaleufú is a small Chilean town located in Northern Patagonia. It may be small but the tourism industry is growing fast! Somewhere along the way the secret of this thrilling whitewater haven.

The Futaleufú River, also known as “Fu”, runs more than 120 miles of bright blue/turquoise water. Flowing through the Andes mountains with over 47 rapids ranging from easy class ll to extremely challenging at class V.

  • Where in NC Can You Mountain Bike When It’s Raining?

We want to ride, but it’s going to rain all weekend!

    So what?

Pisgah National forest doesn’t care if its rainy, sunny, or snowy. We’re still gonna send it, and you should too! Mountain biking is a fun sport that should be enjoyed in all types of weather.

Remember as a kid, playing in the mud? Well, now you can do it on a bike! Slipping and sliding through the chunk, splashing through the puddles just barely hangin’ on having a blast. What’s better than that? A sunny day? Nahh… its all on how you look at it. If you look at a rainy day thinking that you can’t ride or do anything outdoors, that’s exactly what the day will give you. If you look at it with a positive outlook though, can make it a day filled with fun and excitement!

    Pisgah

To me, a rainy day is just as good if not better than a sunny day. Something about splashing through puddles, sliding through the mud, and getting filthy produces nothing but smiles and pure joy. When the adventure crew is out playing in the rain and mud, you can find us on our bikes in Pisgah giggling and smiling until our cheek muscles hurt.

    Pisgah

Pisgah is located in the mountains of Western North Carolina and offers some of the gnarliest riding on the East Coast. Most of Pisgah is not a place for beginners but is a nice thrill if you know what you’re doing. With elevations over six thousand feet, you could say there is some elevation change. I will say if you like to shred a good downhill, this is the place. These runs seem to be never ending with nothing but smiles the whole way down.

    Pisgah

It is becoming more and more of a struggle to find places to ride in the rain or even after it rains. Lots of open trails today seem to be so well manicured that they don’t allow you to ride them during or after the rain. This is great, but it is always a blast to ride some raw chunk, washouts, and natural terrain. Pisgah provides this for us and that is why it’s one of our favorites to ride. Our favorite thing actually is to ride all day, and then backpack the falls.

    Pisgah

Every day has the potential to be a great day. It all depends on what you make of it! – Say Adventurous.

  • Hiking Hawaii

Hiking in a tropical paradise with panoramic views, breathtaking waterfalls and volcanic landscapes is on the bucket list of many, especially when considering the island of Hawaii.  With trails ranging from family-oriented or easy to skilled or expert, this chain of volcanic islands offers opportunities to explore unlike any other place on Earth.

    Hawaii

One of the most famous hikes is the Kalalau Trail.  This 22-mile round trip hike located on Kauai, traverses through five valleys and across cliffs.  Here you will find epic views on the NaPall Coast. It leads to Kalalau Beach, which is only accessible via this hike.  It is a tropical paradise where you will enjoy panoramic views, turquoise water and white sand. However, please beware.  Trails are narrow and quickly flood. Falling rocks make for unsafe swimming. Always remain cautious, but what an experience!  It’s an outstanding hike.

    Hawaii

Kaena Point is another popular destination. This is an easier hike with some folklore attached.  It is said to be the place where souls go after death to leap into the otherworld. This wraps around Kaena Point on the western tip of Oahu where a lighthouse oversees a serene beach.  Here there are natural tidepools, stone arches and stunning views. Often monk seals can be seen lounging in the tidepools. Little shade can be found on this hike, so remember to pack plenty of water and sunblock.

    Hawaii

Diamond Head Trail is another easier hike on Oahu on the edge of Waikiki Coast. This three-mile round trip hike has a 500’ elevation gain with two sets of steep stairs, which can be strenuous, but it’s worth it.  It winds inside an extinct crater where volcanic rock covers 450 acres. At the summit you will reach the Diamond Head State Monument where on a clear day you will see a spectacular view of Oahu’s popular south shore.

    Hawaii

Another great hike is the Koko Head Crater Trail, which is also on Oahu.  Depending on your ability, this hike will be thirty minutes to an hour, but it is one of the best.  Be sure to take breaks as you climb the 1,000 steep stairs. This trail can be a grueling workout, but the panoramic views of Diamond Head and lava rock beaches are most rewarding!

    Hawaii

The easy to moderate Manoa Falls Trail traverses through lush vegetation with spectacular scenery.  Much wildlife may be observed including many varieties of birds. Please take extra care in the rain as trails may quickly become slippery.  Also keep in mind that while the falls are quite a sight to experience, swimming may be hazardous and is not recommended.

    Hawaii

Also known as the Kaiwa Ridge Trail, the Lanikai Pillbox Hike winds along the Kaiwa Ridge on Oahu.  It leads to a stunning view of Lanikai Beach and the Mokulua Islands. Its nickname “pillboxes” come from the boxes scattered along the trail.  This hike is especially recommended for beautiful coastline sunrise views. If hiking with the sunrise in mind, begin early and bring a flashlight.

    Hawaii

One of the more dangerous or adventurous hikes is the Olomana Three Peaks Trail on Oahu. Caution is especially advised here as there is no room for error.  It is very steep with many drop-offs. Do not attempt this hike if you have any fear of heights. Dry days are the best to plan this hike. Peak One is strenuous with drops on both sides.  Peak Two is less challenging with stunning views. Peak Three is only for the most experienced mountaineers. This trail is popular with mountain bikers and rock climbers alike.

    Hawaii

Before undertaking any hiking trip in Hawaii, there are a few unofficial rules for all hikers as even the easiest hike may be dangerous. Preparation is key to success.  Always tell someone where you are going! Proper footwear is a must. No sandals. Considerations for changeable weather is on the list. Flash flooding remains a constant threat, so beware of that possibility.  Pay attention to ground conditions as slippery mud can be treacherous especially on steep slopes. Be sure to pack enough water for each hiker (½ liter per mile) and include plenty of snacks as well as sunblock.  Also, there are many areas that are sacred to locals, so treat all areas with respect. Always make note of trail difficulties and only traverse those you know you can handle. Some hikes include dangerous cliff walks, where fatalities have occurred.  Personal safety needs to be a priority. One last thought, beware of the temptation for the ultimate selfie. Use care when planning your photos.

    Hawaii

Choices for hiking seem endless in Hawaii, so before you leave for your trip, be sure to research.  Only a few hikes are summarized here, but there are many. When planning, in order to make the most of your trip, know your strengths and consider carefully. Most of all enjoy this spectacular experience!

    The Cause?

Our guides have a crazy passion for dirt bikes, and a crazy passion to serve. We combine these two passions to support specific needs in the surrounding areas of Cusco and the places where we ride. Our guides’ business model provides for 100% of profits to be directed to The Altivas Canas Children’s Project on the edge of Cusco. With our model, any type of business will suffice, but we love dirt bikes, adventure, and most importantly helping those in need.

    Dirt Bike Vacation

We have committed 100% of the profits from the first year to help build a facility for the Altivas Canas Project. Years 2-5 will be designated to develop an endowment fund that will provide sufficient income for the life of the project and beyond. True sustainability is the key.

The Altivas Canas Children’s Project is a grass roots mission that reaches out to children in the poverty stricken area of Altivas Canas. It was started 11 years ago by a single mother of three children. She could not afford to feed her kids, nor could she leave them alone to work. Quintina felt called to do something about it. She went throughout her poor neighborhood in search of other single mothers that were in the same situation. She found a handful of them. She then invited the children of the other mothers to come to her home in order to help raise the kids in a healthy home environment. The other mothers were then able to go out and work, which began to provide some support for Quintina’s work. Thus, the grass roots of the mission.

    Dirt Bike Vacation

The mission is currently reaching 25-30 kids daily in the afternoon program and another 10 younger kids during a morning program. At the end of the day, the kids have their homework done, have been fed a nutritious meal, get to experience social interaction and enjoy some physical activities. They return home each evening where they can spend quality time with their mothers who have been working hard all day.

    Dirt Bike Vacation

The limitation with the current project is space, but we hope to provide enough support to get the space needed. Quintina has a dream of reaching more children, but without more space, her humble home has just not been enough space. She has recently purchased the neighboring property and has begun construction of a facility. She is well vested in the project and is committed to long term success of the project. Everyone who decides to experience this great trip will be helping Quintina and the Altivas Canas Children’s Project to positively impact the lives of these amazing children. If you are looking to do a moto trip any time soon, ride for a cause with Inclusive Excursions in Peru.

  • Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Boots, gloves, goggles…check.  All packed and ready to go–off for Steamboat.  After a mild winter in North Carolina, we were finally headed for quality family time in the Colorado snow.

colorado skiing snowboardingSteamboat Springs is known for its Champagne Powder®, which we have learned makes the best snow for skiing.  Unlike ski resorts in the east, this snow is so light and powdery that snowballs don’t stick. Skis and snowboards seemed to glide effortlessly down the 165 trails on the mountain and the out of bound glades. Steamboat was the perfect ski destination for our family who range from intermediate to expert, but even beginner skiers or boarders will find comfortable trails throughout.  Raised in the east with plenty of ice skiing, Champagne Powder® was a delight–a joy–for all of us.

skiing colorado steamboatIt’s hard not to compare this resort to mountains in the east, but knowing the difference makes one appreciate the experience even more.  Not only were trails free from ice, but they were free from crowds as well. Most times the trails felt as though they were our own. What a sense of freedom we enjoyed!  No ice, no crowds–just free flowing, silent trails of powder and fun.

snowboarding skiing steamboat coloradoBlessed with two days of blue skies and the rest of the days getting blasted with snow. We had the best of both, and it truly was a winter wonderland.  Riding the gondola gave the opportunity to soak in the landscape. Mountain homes topped with several feet of sparkling white powder, layered snow-covered Rockies in the distance, and the small western town of Steamboat resting below all added to the beauty.  Aspens rustled in the breeze and pines held tight to the snow…what a peaceful sight.

We highly recommend Steamboat Springs for anyone looking for the total snow experience.

  • Adventuring in Whistler, Canada

Just north of Vancouver, British Columbia, lies Whistler–home of the 2010 Olympics and one of the largest ski resorts in North America.  Often called a Winter Wonderland, Whistler adventurers enjoy pow-filled fun with skiing, snowboarding, ziplining, snowshoeing, heli-skiing/boarding, nordic skiing and more.  With 8,100 acres of slopes, 200+ marked trails, 16 alpine bowls, 3 glaciers, not to mention the world class terrain parks, Whistler is a certainly a “skiers dream destination.”

Activities abound for skiers and non-skiers alike in this family-friendly resort. The Peak 2 Peak Gondola offers sightseeing reaching a 360º breathtaking view of Whistler Blackcomb. Easy to access, this Chalet-style village creates a unique atmosphere to enjoy shopping, dining, art and culture.

For a once in a lifetime experience, consider a helicopter tour to explore forests, rivers, summits, peaks and glaciers.  Stopping at a glacial ice cave is an awe-inspiring destination where ice illuminates, where it is said that “time bends and minutes dissolve.”  Along with helicopter tours, guided snowmobiling trips are another popular way to explore the backcountry. Ice climbing is yet one more way to adventure in Whistler.  Even beginners may experience the excitement of ice climbing with classes available for all.

Activities in Whistler are year ‘round.  The slopes remain open through the end of May.  In spring, summer and fall, biking, hiking, paddling, and ziplining are plentiful. In summer, along with helicopter excursions, golfing, swimming, floatplaning and sightseeing are popular.
